Inspite of Federal Government directive asking all commercial banks in the country to begin full operations, Guaranty Trust Bank is still offering partial service .
The Federal Government had directed all Deposit Money Banks, DMBs and financial HoldCos to resume full operation across all their branches on June 2.
The directive was in line with government’s strategy to gradually ease the lockdown across the country to enable banks resume full operations based on prescribed directives.
In addition, operating fully would enable banks attend to customers complaints, answer traditional customers and reduce the spread of the pandemic from the multitude that flooded the few branches attending to customers.
Already some banks have heeded to the directive by launching full services.
Some of them are :United Bank for Africa (UBA), Wema Bank, Fidelity Bank, Sterling Bank, Unity Bank and Providus Bank
channels.
But Gtbank has in a statement sent to all its customers, identify few branches that will be operating from Monday 8th to Thursday 11th of June, 2020.
From the statement, only one branch operated in Bauchi, Ekiti, Gombe, Benue, Ebonyi and Imo states, amongst others.
All efforts to reach the bank to comment on their decision have proven abortive.
Earlier, the Managing Director of ARISE TV, Ms. Ijeoma Nwogwugwu, had said that banks not opening all their branches was selfish.
She said in her Monday column on Thisday Newspapers, “It occurred to me that the banks were using the cover of Covid-19 to cut costs and reduce their losses by keeping commercially unviable branches shut during this period. With this as a strategy, they will be able to increase profitability without a care in the world of the consequence of their irresponsible action. This is unacceptable and should not be sanctioned by the CBN or the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on Covid-19.”
