The ING was put in place by the Babangida-led military junta in the aftermath of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election acclaimed to have been won by the late Chief MKO Abiola.

The deceased was the head of ING between August 26 and November 17, 1993 after Babangida stepped aside.

He was ousted three months later in a palace coup led by the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha.
