Mr Adekoye Adetoun, Managing Director, Eco-friendly dry cleaner, has revealed that wet cleaning method is better for health of citizens in Nigeria, as well as environment.
Adetoun told the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) in Lagos, on Thursday.
He said that preserving the environment as well as our health is a major concern that must be addressed intentionally.
“Having an environmental dry cleaning practice is every citizen’s part in preserving the environment.
“Wet cleaning is the perfect dry cleaning practice to keep a safer environment, ” he said.
According to him, We have to avoid the use of components that are known to be harmful to the environment.
“Therefore, wet cleaning method is better for the health as well as the environment since the components used are safe, ” he said.
Adetoun described wet cleaning as eco-friendly cleaning solution.
“Wet cleaning can be described as a push towards environmentally cleaning solution
“In wet cleaning, water, garment and detergent are added to a specially made computer-controlled machine.
“In dry cleaning, Perchloroethylene (PERC), which is a reproductive toxicant, neurotoxicant, a potential human carcinogen (likely to cause cancer), and a persistent environmental pollutant is widely used, ” he said.
He added that PERC have been documented to be harmful with side effects. In 1990, the Federal Air Clean Act required all drycleaners to limit their PERC Emissions.
“In 2001, The California clean Air Resources board adopted the airborne toxic control measure to phase out all dry cleaners’ use of PERC by 2023.
“According to some reports, PERC is harmful even in small doses, low levels of PERC can cause feelings of dizziness, inebriation, sleepiness.
“It can also cause irritated mouth, eyes, throat, nose and respiratory tract.
“High levels of PERC can also affect the central Nervous System and cause unconsciousness or death, ” he said.
Adetoun optimistic that wet cleaning is the perfect alternative to dry cleaning
“Wet cleaning is the perfect alternative to dry cleaning. It can be used to dry clean items such as wool, silk, leather, and suede.
“Wet cleaning is safe and a chemical-free alternative and it keeps clothes looking and feeling fresh, ” he said.
He said that, citizens have to work steadily to eliminate harmful dry cleaning methods
“If dry cleaning services are part of your daily routine, it is best to opt for the services that utilize environmentally friendly dry cleaning methods.
” In doing so, you are doing your part in preserving the environment as well as your health, ” he said.
