The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a nationwide strike threat due to the Federal Government’s failure to appoint governing councils for Federal Universities.
The union criticized the Federal Government, led by President Bola Tinubu, for its careless approach to academic matters in Nigerian Federal Universities.
During a press briefing at the University of Abuja, the group of academics criticized the 35% salary increase for professors and the 25% raise for other university staff, viewing it as a temporary wage adjustment subject to government withdrawal.
During the ongoing briefing, ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke emphasized that the Tinubu-led government has had sufficient time to take action.
Prof. Osodeke also voiced concern over the dissolution of governing councils, stating that it is illegal and contrary to university principles.
The NUC directive followed an order issued three days earlier by President Bola Tinubu, which instructed the dissolution of boards across all government parastatals, agencies, and companies.
