Nigerians have gone to the social media to react to an article published on Daily Trust Newspapers against a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani Kayode.
The article published on Sunday was titled,”FFK, The Drug Addled Thug In Designer Wears”.
The tone of the article was such that ridiculed the former Aviation Minister in what looks like a reprisal attack against him.
Recall that Fani Kayode had an unpleasant encounter with a Daily Trust Journalist last week at a press conference organised for Fani Kayode in Calabar, Cross Rivers state.
The journalist in question asked Fani Kayode who was bankrolling his tour of projects in the South-South states, but Fani Kayode busted out in annoyance, calling the journalist stupid,also using all manner of unprintable words.
Regretting his action that was largely condemned in the media and non media circles, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP politician expressed regret for his actions and begged to be forgiven.
Daily Trust also issued a statement condemning the verbal outburst on its journalist, adding that the politician will be held responsible should anything happened to its reporter.
Things however took a new twist today when Daily Trust published another article that seemed to reduce the erring politician.
The first five paragraph of the opinion article read: “Femi Fani-Kayode, (more popularly known as FFK by the initials of his name) the designer wearing son of Chief Remilekun Fani-Kayode, (Fanny power) Deputy Premier of the Western region in the first republic is the perfect example of a pig still being a pig even with a lipstick on.
“Yes, he is on record to have attended the high-brow English public school Harrow and followed that up with a law degree from the prestigious University of London and a masters from the world famous Cambridge University.
“But if the idea was to mould him in character and training in the best traditions of an English gentleman having attended these institutions of British upper crust society, it has proven to be a waste of expensive English public school education.
“His bohemian lifestyle while in the United Kingdom included an addiction to drugs for which he had to seek spiritual and physical rehabilitation in Ghana. But till today he has not been totally cured of that habit which leads him to fits of boorishness, irascibility and thuggish behaviour unbecoming of the status he occupies in Nigerian public life.
“Though he likes all too often to take pride in and show off his English public education as a badge of honour, unfortunately FFK does not live up to the genteel and hallowed requirement of an Oxbridger in all he does. In the public space which he courts and hugs for recognition and relevance he is always expected to exhibit his base, yobbish, uncouth manners of an alley cat at persons who are his betters in all parameters of life.
The article has however come under criticism of many who feel Daily Trust was was petty to have published such article even after the politician apologised publicly.
Some of the reactions by different social media users read: “It actually shows that they already set their mind to attack FFK apology or no apology. Now that everything is now level, the NUJ owes it a duty to direct it’s affiliates to resume the coverage of FFK’s tour.”
“Utterly needless and unwarranted”.
“They deployed the foul language they condemned FFK for, in that editorial. It is totally unnecessary since the man in question has apologized to the paper. They went too hard”.
One of those who however was on the side of the Northern based paper wrote: “I don’t think so sir. You expect that everyone should keep mute and be looking at him. Next time, he would slap a journalist. He deserves whatever he’s getting now and example to others like him.
“Public figures must learn decorum in their public life. They cannot just say anything and bully people. He could simply say “I’m sorry, I’m not going answer that question. Please ask your next question”
Several knocks and kudos but mostly knocks have accompanied the further reaction of Daily Trust.
The article has also been able to gather pity for the erring politician
