A gas truck caught fire and exploded last night in the Gwagwa community of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, causing residents to flee for their lives.
The incident occurred around 8:30 pm near a location known as Police Junction, according to eyewitnesses, reports Saturday Tribune.
In a statement provided by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, it was revealed that on June 9, 2023, at approximately 9:00 am, a tanker carrying Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) experienced a mechanical fault near Gwagwa primary school along Gwagwa-Karmo road.
While attempts were being made to address the fault, a spark occurred, leading to an explosion that engulfed the tanker in flames. Fortunately, no lives were lost.
SP Josephine Adeh stated, “The situation is under control as police officers from GWAGWA Divisional Police Headquarters, led by the Divisional Police Officer, and operatives of the Federal Fire Service swiftly responded to the scene.
They effectively managed the damage, implemented safety measures, and controlled the crowd. Efforts are currently underway to completely extinguish the contained inferno.”
Furthermore, an investigation into the immediate and underlying cause of the explosion has been initiated. The public is urged to disregard any conflicting accounts and carry on with their lawful activities without fear.
