A former Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, fraudulently sold two force ranks to the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Mustafa Magu for the sum of Thirty Five Million Naira each, DENISAURUS News has reported.
Police source familiar with the details of this act, informed the newspaper that Mr Magu used the illicit wealth from his corrupt activities at the anti-graft agency to curry favours, especially his promotion from Assistant Commissioner of Police to Deputy Commissioner of Police, and now to the rank of Commissioner of Police.
Mr Magu, the only one whose nomination as substantive chairman was rejected by the National Assembly, NASS Senate, has course mates who are still Assistant Commissioner of Police.
His promotion to Commissioner of Police, exclusively reported by DENISAURUS News, a month before the Police Service Commission, PSC, published it on its website, showed how quick his promotion were coming and how he was not due for them.
A police officer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, noted that the promotion was bought by Mr Magu.
“Promotion for the two ranks, should take a minimum of four years each, and maximum of eight years for both. For your information, CP Magu paid former IGP Idris for the two ranks of DCP and CP each for ₦35million within two years, but it was an advanced payment which totals ₦70million. I was fully in the know of the transactions.
“Other senior police officers serving at the anti-graft agency, also got rapid promotions under former IGP Idris, after parting with few millions of Naira. Some of these police officers who were on secondment at the EFCC, have been placed at positions above the regular staff members of the agency,” the source related to this newspaper.
Because of the illegalities committed by IGP Idris, who served in office from 21 March 2016 – 06 January 2019, EFCC’s Magu can not investigate or arrest the erstwhile Nigeria Police Force, NPF, Chief for financial crimes, despite allegations of misdeeds levelled against him during his tenure.
A Police Inspector, who wish not to be named, but familiar with the dealings between Mr Magu and ex-IG Idris, informed this newspaper that though the former police chief, was known for auctioning promotions to the highest bidder, “CP Magu is one of the most known beneficiaries.
“The EFCC boss attempt blackmailing the former IGP Idris, and because he was afraid that Magu was close to late Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, the erstwhile IGP started dancing to the beats of the corrupt anti-graft boss.
“So, just to ensure that Magu is satisfied and not send any negative report against him to the Presidency, ex-IG Idris assured that he will always insert the name of the EFCC boss in new promotions that may come up, which he fulfilled. But in turn, CP Magu should also shake body (pay money) since he has gotten alot of money as the acting chair of the EFCC.
“If you must know, even the most brilliant mates of CP Magu, are still on the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police, talk more of him whose university certificate is even a subject of debate. Has anyone bothered to ask, with the punishment and reprimand given to the EFCC boss in 2010, how and when did he overtake his seniors at the Nigeria Police Force.
“In addition to the kind gesture from CP Magu to the Ex-IG Idris, is to recruit the child of the latter into the Service of the EFCC, this is to ensure that even after the sack of the anti-graft boss, the father can get an intervention and soft landing.”DENISAURUS News was reliably informed.
The anti-graft boss was dubbed as a perennial offender by the Department of State Services, DSS, in a report submitted to the NASS Senate in October 2016.
Following the corrupt activities and fraternity with Politically Exposed Persons, PEPs, who were being investigated by the EFCC, the secret police described Mr Magu as a “liability to the anti-corruption fight of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.” As such, he has failed the integrity test of the service.
Similarly, a former Deputy Inspector General of Police, Parry Osayande, who chaired the committee that investigated the anti-graft boss in 2010, stated that “Magu is a smartly corrupt Officer, and cannot be trusted with money and power”.
Efforts made to reach out to Ibrahim Magu on this new exposé, over his illegal promotion to the two separate ranks of DCP and CP, didn’t yield any result as the anti-graft boss would not respond to the calls of DENISAURUS News.
