Perpetrators’ Diary
This reporter made a frantic move to get the voices of some perpetrators of the heinous crime, especially those alleged in this report. The move was intended to get their reactions, and attitudes to a perpetrated crime.
The feedback ranges from – Banging of phones, subsequent barring of reporter’s line, and questions like, “Who are you” and “God punish you,” amongst others.
Not giving up still, this reporter was able to track down the case of four-year-old Kamila through the support of an NGO.
Kamila was raped by his 60-year-old uncle who is HIV positive. Although ThisDay was unable to talk to the culprit directly, he gave a reason for the act as a solution to get him cured of HIV, according to Kamila’s mother.
Kamila’s mother added, : “He said a spiritualist told him to go and rape a child in order to be cured from HIV.”
Although Kamila has since been placed on anti-retrovirus drugs to prevent her from contracting HIV from his uncle, her fate is yet unknown as she had already stayed more than 72 hours before reporting.
“She is presently on a drug to be used for three months, after three months, she will be checked to confirm if she will need to repeat it,” said Kamila’s mother.
As usual, justice is being threatened in this case as the NGO monitoring the case reported that the mother of the victim is gradually backing out.
According to Apara , perpetrators usually give several quirky reasons for committing the crime of incest, with some showing remorse and others not.
Apara said: “Some say they do it because they have never slept with a virgin before and want to know what it’s like to sleep with one, others do it on spiritual ground. Some others see it as a way to avenge insult from victims, some to get healed from degenerative disease, while some are just narcissistic. You can imagine, one said that he did it to see if women can actually scream during sex as he watched in movies. Some are even so bold that they smile in front of police while being interrogated.”
In another instance, a 40- year-old lied to his innocent daughter, Blessing, that tradition required that he must be the first man to sleep with her so that she could be able to have a child. The innocent girl agreed.
The father, however, didn’t stop the first time. It became a regular activity while the girl counted it a normal thing.
Blessing presently has a baby for her father, but neither she nor her mother is willing to pursue the matter in court. The reason is not farfetched.
Pam explained that a level of patriarchy also played out in most confessions of perpetrators. “They often think they are acting within their rights as men or head of the family. This is prevalent in family settings where they are believed to be acting within their rights as men, so they do not demonstrate any form of remorse. These men require re-orientation to see their female counterpart as partners and not acquisition and property.”
Akogun underscored the need for a psychological examination of perpetrators which is being overlooked.
She said: “Perpetrators of this act need to be exposed to psychological treatment. This is because some may be experiencing psychological disorders such as sexual disorders or even personality problems and disorders, requiring treatment.”
